Tips to Fix the Center Multi-Function Display in Cars

Car Center Multi-Function Display

The center multi-function display is a common feature that can be found in most newer cars. This display may stop working or become unresponsive, in turn, making it difficult to control many functions of the car.

The center multi-function display, also referred to as the MFD, is a display that manages non-essential functions such as your radio, heated seats, air conditioning, heater, audio storage, GPS, backup camera, etc. If this display unit malfunctions and only has a black screen or if the touch screen becomes unresponsive, it can be very irritating.

Causes of Multi-Function Display Issues

There are a few things that can cause issues with your center multi-function display unit. Some issues can be easily rectified while others will require a little more time and effort.

Accidentally turned off the display
Did you or someone else accidentally turn off the display from the menu? This might sound like common sense to check, but most people don’t realize that they can actually turn the display off. Check your manual to see how to turn the display back on.

Bad Fuse
A bad fuse can cause the center multi-function display in your car to quit working.

Loose Connection
The most common issue is a loose connection. The issue can usually be rectified by having the connection re-soldered.

Faulty Multi-Function Display Unit
The worst-case scenario is that the unit completely fails. If this is the case, the whole thing will need to be replaced. New units can be quite expensive. It’s sometimes possible to find a refurbished display unit that will save you money.

Fixing the Issues

Depending on the cause of the issue will determine how easily we can take care of your display problem.

The easiest fix is figuring out how to turn the screen back on if it was accidentally turned off. This is the fix that we are all hoping for. All we have to do is find the instructions for your display, and we can get you back up and running. This is one good reason that you should always keep your manuals in the glovebox.

The next issue that is easily taken care of is replacing a bad fuse. Fuses don’t usually go bad that often, but it does happen from time to time.

The next scenario is that you have a loose connection. Having a loose connection can easily be fixed by re-soldering the wire. In some cases, the issue can be taken care of right away while in other situations the unit may need to be sent out for repair. We recommend that you have the unit repaired, if possible. Purchasing a new unit can be quite expensive.

If the unit completely fails, it will need to be replaced. As previously mentioned, a new display is quite costly. If you can get a refurbished display, this will allow you to save a substantial amount of money. And most refurbished units come with a warranty that is comparable to a new display.
